Boards, entrance exams, what next

• Class 11–12 decide your next step: your board marks and your entrance exam (JEE, NEET, CUET, CLAT, NDA or others) together open college doors.
• Do not ignore Class 11: about half of every entrance exam comes from the Class 11 syllabus.
• Board marks still matter: IITs and NITs need 75% (65% for SC/ST/PwD), NEET needs 50% in PCB, CLAT needs 45%, and many scholarships use Class 12 marks.
• This map follows CBSE rules; state boards are similar but not the same.

• CBSE Class 12 board exam 2027 registration: your school submits it by 21 October 2026 (₹1,600 for 5 subjects + ₹160 per practical subject; late fee till 30 October).
• CLAT 2027: register by 31 October 2026; exam on 6 December 2026 (reported).
• National Scholarship Portal (Central Sector Scholarship, Pragati, post-matric): apply by 31 October 2026.
• NDA I 2027: notice on 2 December 2026, apply by 22 December, exam 11 April 2027.
• JEE Main 2027 Session 1: 22–30 January 2027 (tentative).

How Class 11–12 boards work

Subjects and marks

• At least 5 subjects (one must be Hindi or English), the same in Class 11 and 12, plus an optional 6th. If you fail one of the five, a passed 6th subject can replace it.
• Subjects with practicals: usually 70 theory + 30 practical. Others: 80 theory + 20 internal (project).
• You need 33% in theory and 33% in practical/internal separately. About half of the board paper tests application (case-based and competency questions).
• You cannot change subjects after your school submits the board registration list, so decide early in Class 11.

How Class 11–12 boards work

75% attendance rule

• Since August 2025, CBSE requires 75% attendance to sit the board exam. Only medical, sports or other serious, documented reasons can excuse up to 25%.
• Students found enrolled in "dummy schools" (registered but not attending, often while at coaching) can be barred from the board exam, and the school can lose its affiliation.
• If you want to study mainly at home or coaching, the honest route is NIOS (open school), not a dummy school.

How Class 11–12 boards work

Results, re-checking and compartment

• Class 12 results usually come in May (13 May in 2026). Class 12 has one board exam; the two-exam system is only for Class 10.
• Unhappy with marks? First get a scanned copy of your answer book (₹100), then apply for verification (₹100) or re-evaluation (₹25 per question). Fees are refunded if marks go up.
• Supplementary exam in July: clear one failed subject (compartment) or improve one subject.

Minimum board marks

• IIT/NIT/IIIT: 75% in Class 12 (65% SC/ST/PwD) or top 20 percentile of your board.
• NEET: 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Biology (40% reserved categories, 45% PwD).
• CLAT: 45% (40% SC/ST/PwD). CUET: each university sets its own.
• Scholarships: the Central Sector Scholarship needs a top-20% score in your board (above the 80th percentile).

Boards and entrance together

A year plan that works

• Class 11: build concepts properly; most students lose ranks because Class 11 was weak.
• Class 12, April–November: finish the syllabus for both board and entrance.
• December–January: board sample papers plus entrance mock tests (JEE Main Session 1 is in January).
• February–March: board exams. April–May: full focus on entrance mocks.
• This is general advice, not an official rule.

• CBSE Single Girl Child: ₹1,000 a month in Class 11–12 for only daughters with 70%+ in Class 10 (family income up to ₹8 lakh, school fee up to ₹3,000 a month). Renewal needs 70% in Class 11.
• AICTE Pragati: ₹50,000 a year for girls in technical diploma or degree courses.
• Half of the Central Sector Scholarships are reserved for girls.

• For students above the 80th percentile of their Class 12 board with family income up to ₹4.5 lakh: ₹12,000 a year in college years 1–3 and ₹20,000 after that. 82,000 scholarships a year.
• Apply on the National Scholarship Portal after Class 12 (2026-27 deadline: 31 October 2026).

• Post-matric scholarships for SC, ST, OBC and minority students start from Class 11.
• INSPIRE-SHE: ₹80,000 a year for top students who study natural sciences.
• PM-Vidyalaxmi: education loans without collateral or guarantor for good colleges, with interest help for families earning up to ₹8 lakh.

• JEE Main: 3 consecutive years (Class 12 year + 2). JEE Advanced: only 2 attempts in consecutive years.
• NEET: no attempt limit and no upper age limit.
• A drop year works when you know exactly why you missed (weak basics, too little practice) and have a plan to fix it.

• CBSE lets you improve one subject in the July supplementary exam.
• You can add a subject later through NIOS, for example Biology to become eligible for NEET.

• Government guidelines say coaching centres should not enrol students under 16, must not promise ranks, and must provide counselling.
