Commerce and CA

Accounts, finance and business careers

• Commerce leads to some of India's most respected careers: Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), Cost Accountant (CMA), plus B.Com, BBA, economics, banking, actuarial science and MBA.
• You do not need to be from a rich family. ICAI fees for the whole CA course are about ₹56,500, and ICAI runs free live classes and gives free study material.
• But be honest about the effort: CA pass rates are low (often 10–20% per sitting), so it needs years of steady work.
• CA does not require Maths in Class 12, and students from any stream can join.

Professional courses

• CA: accounts, audit, tax, finance. The most demanding and widely known. About 4.5–5+ years after Class 12.
• CS: company law, governance, compliance in companies. About 3–4 years.
• CMA: costing, management accounting, finance in industry. About 3–4 years.
• All three let you start after Class 12 and include practical training.

• B.Com / B.Com (Hons), BBA/BMS, Economics (Hons) through CUET or university admission. Many students do B.Com alongside CA.
• After a degree: MBA, M.Com, banking jobs, government jobs, data and finance roles.

• Enjoy numbers, rules and detail, and can study steadily for years: CA or CMA.
• Like law, writing and how companies are run: CS.
• Want a broad degree and campus life first: B.Com, BBA or Economics, then decide.

• Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, plus English and usually Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.
• Practise accounting problems daily; Business Studies and Economics need case-based answers.

Maths, Applied Maths or none?

• CA, CS and CMA do not require Maths in Class 12, but CA Foundation has a business maths and statistics paper.
• Without Maths, some doors close: for example Economics (Hons) at Delhi University needs Maths or Applied Maths (reported), and actuarial science and analytics are harder.
• If you are unsure, take Applied Mathematics: it keeps more options open.

Step 1: Foundation

• Register with ICAI after Class 10 (provisionally); sit the exam after your Class 12 exam. Register at least 4 months before the exam month.
• 4 papers: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, Business Economics (the last two are objective with negative marking).
• Held three times a year: January, May, September.
• Graduates skip Foundation: commerce graduates with 55% (others 60%) can enter Intermediate directly.

Step 2: Intermediate

• 6 papers in 2 groups: Advanced Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, Taxation; Cost and Management Accounting, Auditing and Ethics, Financial and Strategic Management.
• At least 8 months of registration before the exam. Held January, May and September.

Step 3: Practical training (articleship)

• After passing both Intermediate groups and a 4-week orientation and IT course (ICITSS): 2 years of articleship with a practising CA.
• You are paid a monthly stipend, set by ICAI by city size (currently ₹2,000–6,000 a month; higher rates have been proposed).
• The last 9–12 months can be industrial training in a company (minimum stipend ₹15,000 a month).

Step 4: Final

• 6 papers, including a multi-disciplinary case study; each paper is 30% MCQs and 70% written. Plus 4 short online modules.
• From May 2026, CA Final is held twice a year: May and November. You can answer in Hindi or English at every level.

Passing and pass rates

• At every level you need 40% in each paper and 50% overall in one sitting. Scoring 60%+ in a paper exempts it for the next 3 attempts.
• May 2026 pass rates: Foundation 20%, Intermediate both groups 8.5%, Final both groups 14%.
• Most successful CAs fail at least once. Plan for it; do not give up after one result.

After qualifying

• Work in audit and tax firms, companies (finance, accounts, tax), banks, consulting, or start your own practice.
• ICAI's campus placement in early 2026 had a highest domestic offer of ₹32.3 lakh a year; the average starting package has been reported at about ₹12–13 lakh.

Steps

• Start with CSEET (entry test) after Class 12. From 2026 it is offline, 4 papers, held February, June and October (reported).
• Graduates and some others are exempt from CSEET.
• Then Executive and Professional levels (exams in June and December), and about 21 months of practical training plus short programmes.

• Executive registration is about ₹18,900 (from April 2026, reported); CSEET about ₹9,000.
• ICSI offers fee concessions for SC/ST students (50%), the North-East and some hill and island regions, armed forces families and Agniveers, widows and wards of martyrs, and students with disabilities (reported).

• Exams in June and December. About 15 months of practical training.
• Fees are reported at about ₹6,000 (Foundation), ₹23,100 (Intermediate) and ₹25,000 (Final).

• Central universities admit through CUET-UG: commerce papers include Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and General Aptitude. Choose papers that match your Class 12 subjects.
• Delhi University asks for CUET papers in subjects you studied in Class 12.

BBA and IIM's 5-year programme

• IPMAT admits to the 5-year Integrated Programme in Management at IIM Indore (and similar at other IIMs): 60% in Class 10 and 12 needed (55% SC/ST/PwD). Fees are high (about ₹5 lakh a year).
• Many universities offer BBA/BMS through CUET or their own tests.

• You can do B.Com alongside CA. During articleship you need ICAI permission, and college hours must not clash with training hours.

What CA costs

• ICAI fees (first attempts): Foundation ₹9,000 + ₹1,500 exam; Intermediate ₹18,000 + ₹2,700 exam (both groups); Final ₹22,000 + ₹3,300 exam. About ₹56,500 in all, plus a few smaller course fees.
• Private coaching adds about ₹1.6–3 lakh (reported), but ICAI's free live classes can replace most of it.

• Need-based scholarships for families earning up to ₹5 lakh: ₹6,000 at Foundation, ₹2,500 a month at Intermediate and Final. Merit awards for top Intermediate ranks.
• Top 2 rank holders of any Class 12 board get their Foundation fee refunded if they join within a year.
• 75% off registration fees for students from J&K, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar and the North-East; 100% off for students with 40%+ disability.
