Join the Forces

Officer, Agniveer and more

• There are two main ways in: as an officer (NDA, CDS, AFCAT, technical and special entries, then the SSB interview) or as an Agniveer (soldier, sailor or airman for 4 years).
• Most entries are open to women too, and the forces pay a stipend during officer training.
• Recruitment is free or nearly free (exam fees are ₹0–200). Anyone asking money to "get you selected" is a fraud.
• Start early: fitness, eyesight and basic medical issues can be prepared for or fixed in advance.

Officer or Agniveer?

Officer

• You lead soldiers, sailors or airmen. Entry through an exam or shortlist, then the 5-day SSB interview, then 1–4 years of training at an academy.
• Starting pay: ₹56,100 basic + ₹15,500 Military Service Pay, plus allowances. Permanent Commission officers get a pension.

Officer or Agniveer?

Agniveer

• You serve for 4 years as a soldier, sailor or airman, from age 17.5 to 22 (raised from 21 in 2026).
• Pay starts at ₹30,000 a month; you leave with a tax-free Seva Nidhi of about ₹11.7 lakh. Up to 25% are kept on permanently.

NDA (after Class 12)

• For unmarried men and women aged about 16.5–19.5. Army wing: any Class 12 stream. Air Force and Navy: Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
• Exam: Maths (300) + General Ability (600), then SSB (900). Women, SC/ST and soldiers' children pay no fee.
• NDA-II 2026 had 394 seats (24 for women). Training: 3 years at NDA (with a JNU degree) + 1 year at the service academy. Permanent Commission.
• Held twice a year: April and September.

Officer entries

CDS (after graduation)

• IMA (Army, men, any degree), INA (Navy, men, engineering or B.Sc Physics), AFA (Air Force, degree with Physics and Maths at 12th), OTA (men and women, any degree, Short Service).
• Age 19–24/25. CDS-II 2026 had 451 seats. Women join through OTA (18 seats) and pay no fee.

Officer entries

AFCAT (Air Force)

• Men and women. Flying (age 20–24) needs Physics and Maths at 12th plus a degree; Ground Duty (20–26).
• Online test (100 questions, 300 marks, 2 hours), then the Air Force Selection Board; pilots also take the computerised pilot test.
• Short Service: 14 years (Flying) or 10+4 (Ground). Short Service officers get no pension.

• Army 10+2 TES: after Class 12 with 60% PCM, shortlisted on your JEE Main rank (men only in 2026).
• Navy 10+2 B.Tech: 70% PCM + JEE Main; free B.Tech at the Naval Academy; up to 8 of 60 seats for women.
• TGC (engineering graduates, men) and SSC Tech (engineering graduates, men and women).

NCC special entry

• Graduates with the NCC 'C' certificate, men and women, aged 19–25: no written exam, straight to SSB.
• NCC 'C' holders also get reserved seats in CDS and AFCAT. Join NCC in school or college if you can.

Doctors, nurses and lawyers

• AFMC Pune: MBBS through NEET plus an AFMC test; you serve as an Army doctor (a service bond applies).
• Military Nursing Service: B.Sc Nursing for women through NEET, then a test and interview; about 220 seats.
• JAG (Army law officers): LLB graduates, men and women, shortlisted on CLAT PG, then SSB.

The SSB interview

Day by day

• Day 1 (screening): intelligence test and a picture story with group discussion. Many go home the same day.
• Days 2–5: psychology tests (stories, word and situation reactions), outdoor group tasks, a personal interview, then the final conference.
• Three assessors judge you independently on qualities like responsibility, courage, teamwork and honesty.

The SSB interview

Prepare honestly

• SSB tests who you are, not memorised answers. Read newspapers, play team sports, take responsibility at home and school, and practise speaking clearly.
• Your first Air Force board journey is reimbursed (AC-III train fare); bring your ticket and a bank account in your own name.

Who can join

• Army: online entrance exam first, then the rally (physical, measurements, medical). GD needs Class 10; technical and clerk posts need 12th. Women Military Police is open to women.
• Navy: SSR (12th with Maths and Physics) and MR (10th), men and women.
• Air Force: Agniveervayu, unmarried men and women, 12th or diploma.
• Age 17.5–22 for the 2026-27 cycles (check each notice).

Agniveer

Pay and Seva Nidhi

• ₹30,000 a month in year 1 (₹21,000 in hand) rising each year; ₹9,000 a month goes into the Seva Nidhi, matched by the government.
• At exit: about ₹11.7 lakh tax-free. Life cover ₹48 lakh. No pension.
• Up to 25% are kept on as regular soldiers; the forces have asked for more, but nothing is decided yet.

• Ex-Agniveers get reserved posts: 50% of BSF constable posts, quotas in other central police forces, and in many state police forces (e.g. 20% in West Bengal and UP).
• They skip the physical test and get age relaxation, but must pass the written exam.

Height and fitness

• Minimum height for most officer ground-duty posts: men 157 cm, women 152 cm (relaxations for some regions); pilots 162 cm. Army Agniveer GD men: about 170 cm (less in hill and some regions).
• Officer training expects you to run 2.4 km in about 10:30 (men) / 13:00 (women), and do push-ups and pull-ups.
• Start running, bodyweight exercises and swimming at least 6 months before.

Fitness and medical

Common medical rejections

• Many fixable problems cause rejection: ear wax, tonsils, being over- or underweight, small chest, varicocele, piles, a bent nasal septum, and rigid flat feet.
• Get a check-up early and treat what you can before the medical.
• Tattoos are allowed only on the inner forearm and back of the hand. Pilots need near-perfect eyesight; other branches allow glasses within limits.

• NDA (since 2021), CDS through OTA, AFCAT (including flying), Navy B.Tech entry, SSC Tech, NCC special entry, JAG, Military Nursing Service, AFMC, Coast Guard officers, Territorial Army, and Agniveer in the Navy, Air Force and Army Military Police.
• Women fly fighter jets in the Air Force, and serve in Army branches including Artillery (since 2023), Signals, Engineers and Aviation.

• Since the Supreme Court's 2020 ruling, women Short Service officers can get Permanent Commission like men; NDA women graduate with Permanent Commission.
• Infantry and armoured units are still not open to women.

Avoid recruitment scams

Red flags

• Anyone asking for money, "setting", or a "guaranteed selection" is a fraudster. Exams cost ₹0–200 and selection is only on merit.
• Fake notices spread on WhatsApp (in 2026, PIB flagged a fake "Agniveer rules revised" notice). Fake admit cards and fake internship emails are also common.
• Apply only on official sites: joinindianarmy.nic.in, joinindiannavy.gov.in, the Air Force's AFCAT and Agniveervayu sites, upsc.gov.in and the Coast Guard site.
• Fake websites copy the real ones: for example joinindianarmy.co is NOT the Army (the real site ends in .nic.in), and PIB has flagged a fake Territorial Army site.
• Never go abroad through an agent promising army jobs: the Ministry of External Affairs has warned about agents sending Indians to fight in the Russian army.
• Check suspicious messages with PIB Fact Check; report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
