Overview
Fire and Safety
Firefighter, fire officer, safety officer
What you need to know
- 1Two kinds of work: fire services (firefighters who put out fires and rescue people) and industrial safety (safety officers who prevent accidents in factories, construction sites, mines, ports and oil and gas plants).
- 2Fire service is a state subject: each state, and many city corporations, recruit their own firemen. CISF and the Airports Authority of India also hire fire staff.
- 3Firefighter jobs usually need Class 10 or 12, good height and chest, and eyesight without glasses. A legal safety officer needs a degree or diploma, a recognised industrial safety diploma and work experience.
- 4A private "fire and safety" certificate does not guarantee a job, in India or abroad.
