Become a Physiotherapist

What you need to know

   A physiotherapist helps people move and recover with exercise, hands-on therapy and machines: after injury, stroke or surgery, for sports injuries, back pain, and in old age.

   The degree is BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy). You need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
3. 3
   Under the new national curriculum, BPT takes 5 years: 4 years of study and a 1-year internship.
4. 4
   Physiotherapists are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medicines. Whether they may write "Dr" before their name is still disputed.

   Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology), 50% aggregate in these three, and a pass in English. SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy) and PwD candidates need 40%.

   You must be at least 17 years old at admission. Class 12 from NIOS counts; national institutes do not accept other open-school or correspondence boards.

   Seats are reserved for students with a benchmark disability (40% or more), but both hands must work well, with sensation and strength, to do BPT.

   Four central government institutes for disability rehabilitation teach BPT: PDUNIPPD (New Delhi), NILD (Kolkata), SVNIRTAR (Cuttack) and NIEPMD (Chennai). They admit through one Common Entrance Test (CET).

   The CET is a 2-hour test of 100 Class 12-level questions, with no negative marking. Seats per institute range from about 18 to 68.

   The 2025 national curriculum recommends the title "Physiotherapist" with "Dr" before the name and "PT" after it.
2. 2
   In September 2025 the DGHS (Union health ministry) wrote that physiotherapists cannot use "Dr", then withdrew that letter the next day for further examination.
3. 3
   In January 2026 a Kerala High Court judge allowed the "Dr" prefix; appeals against that ruling were admitted in March 2026. So the matter is not settled. Never present yourself as a medical doctor.
