   India now spends heavily on finding and training young athletes: Khelo India, SAI centres and the TOPS scheme pay for coaching, food, boarding and study.

   Being good at a sport can also get you a government job (sports quota), a college seat, or a career as a coach, PE teacher, physio or trainer.

   Only a few become full-time pros. The smart path is sport plus studies, so every door stays open.

   Girls are welcome in every sport, with their own leagues (ASMITA) and safety rules.

What you need to know

   SAI Training Centres and National Centres of Excellence take young athletes through selection trials. Once selected: free boarding, coaching, kit, medical care and help with schooling.
